SONY Symposium Hosted at Lenfilm

March 19 “Lenfilm” Studios hosted a symposium-workshop for the new SONY 4K products.  The event was organized by SONY with the support of «Lenfilm Studios».

The workshop was attended by students from SPbGUKI, LETI, University of Telecommunications, Polytechnic University, experts from the studios of post-production companies and internet service providers, as well as the representatives of TV channels STRC-St. Petersburg, “Channel 5,” and “100TV.”

At the workshop, the company SONY introduced two of their top cameras: F55 and F65, which can shoot in 4K with full workflow in this same resolution.  After shooting the material it is sent to the work station, where the resulting image can be seen in the processed form.  With these cameras you can also apply color correction and create various special effects.  The same cameras can encode a signal in DCP format, the same format used by modern digital cinemas.

After the symposium-workshop all the guests moved to the Velikan-Park, where in the movie theater they viewed videos shot in the 4K format.

It was no accident that this event was under the name “symposium-workshop.” Each participant had the opportunity to closely view the new cameras and try test shooting them.

Mr. Okahashi, spokesman for SONY (Japan) spoke about the new technology:

“At the moment the 4K format is not very widespread, but it is developing rapidly, and thus I do not doubt that soon we will start importuning this new technology into St. Petersburg, along with SONY’s launch of the new format-8K.”

It was Mr. Okahashi’s first time in St. Petersburg.  He was delighted and pleasantly surprised by the city’s students who were interested not only in the new technology, but also Japanese culture.  The students asked many questions about Japanese culture, which flattered the guest from the country of the Rising Sun.

It is also worth noting that the film studio’s partnership with SONY is not on its first year, instead the seminar-workshop coincided with the opening of the SONY equipment Rental-House at «Lenfilm Studios».

«The purpose of the workshop was to familiarize students with the new standard 4K images that exceed more than 4 times the capacity of the previous quality—High Definition.»

Project Rental-House will provide the help of operators, editors, and professional television color correctors of the highest level.  This is a very profitable partnership with SONY,” - Igor Plaksin, VFX Chief Bureau of «Lenfilm Studios».
